Northern Lights at Hafið Bláa

It’s that time of year again! The days are getting shorter, the nights are getting longer. Visitors to Iceland in the winter are excited about the possibility of seeing the aurora borealis.

Located 40 minutes’ drive from Reykjavík, Hafið Bláa is surrounded by water (great for photographers!) and far from city lights. The restaurant is now closed for the season. For groups, we do open later with at least 1 hours’ notice. Contact us for details.

New opening hours

As the summer is almost over and the days are getting shorter, we changed our opening hours. From now on, we will be open 12-20 and closed Monday – Wednesday. If you’d like to come outside these hours with a group, feel free to contact us.

Thank you for this wonderful summer. We look forward to welcoming you again!

Staff trip to the lava tunnel Raufarhólshellir

The other day we went for a secret trip – nobody knew where we are going! We were told to bring a sturdy shoes, a sweater and be ready for an adventure! After not so long ride we arrived to a parking lot by the lava tunnel Raufarhólshellir.

From about one year the tunnel is accessible via guided tours only. I’ve been there twice 2 years ago exploring the tunnel all by myself and I was quite sure nothing is gonna surprise me this time! I could not be more wrong. I was there during the summer time, and during the winter the tunnel changes into a fairy tale with thousands of icicles! Add to this a great illumination and well-prepared guide who tell you everything you need to know about the place, and it no longer looks like a place where I’ve been before.

During the summer:

During the winter:

The Standard Lava Tunnel Tour lasts about an hour and the ticket is 6.400 kr. Visit their website to learn more: https://thelavatunnel.is/

If you plan exploring the lava tunnel during the summer (when you don’t need other equipment than a sturdy shoes and a flashlight), you may want to consider going to Arnarker cave, which is only 10 km from Raufarhólshellir and is free to visit.

Entrance to Arnarker cave:

Colours of Arnarker:

The lava tunnel Raufarhólshellir is located just 14 km from Hafið Bláa, and Arnarker – 20 km. If you are interested to see the beautiful icicles – hurry up, summer is coming!

We would be happy to tell you about other interesting places nearby when you visit us!
